For so very many of us, now of a certain age, this is where the story began. This is where an already different and unusual comic book took off on a journey of wonder that enthralls us still. You can’t see me, but behind Ben, Sue, Reed and Johnny as they take their cautious faltering steps into an unknown future, I’m there in the square behind them. So was a whole generation of young men and women. We took that journey together, and I’ll always be grateful for the memories. Me and people like me (like the Poppunians, we know who we are!), we’re Stan and Jack’s kids, and we’re privileged.
I get a lump in my throat just remembering. In that single cover artist Jack Kirby encapsulated the adolescence of an entire generation. That wasn’t just the FF. That was all of us. Marvel indeed. Excelsior!
